Selling of my 82 GPZ750 R1
23 Apr 2010 12:59
As much as it pains me to do it, I'm thinking of selling my baby. Purchased the bike in 2000 for $40.00, the price of a full tank of gas to get the bike me. Has been 10 years of rebuilding the bike and its very close to being finished. Wanted to get some input from y'all on what a fair price would be for this bike.

Hi y'all,
And I should mention that the only parts I don't have for the bike are brake pads, chain and air filter. I do appreciate any and all help with pricing of the bike.

The bike looks very nice, but I wouldn't sell it as it sits. In order to get the best price you need to at least be able to start it up for the buyer. Otherwise the buyer is taking a large risk, and that will naturally lower the price. Since you have the exhaust and carbs you should intall them (along with an air filter) so you can run the bike for the buyer. If it was mine, I would also buy and install a chain so the buyer can take a test ride to ensure there are no wierd wobbles or noises. I would think you could make the bike roadworthy with only 1 or 2 days work and maybe $100 or so. I'm sure if the bike runs well you will get a much better price if the buyer can test drive. Of course there is the risk that if you make the bike drivable you will change your mind about selling it.

I agree with 650ed. It looks very nice but I wouldn't expect to pay a lot of money for a non-runner.

I agree with 650ed...a running bike is far more valuable than a non-runner with promises. Another hint would be to finish putting decals on the bike...1982 KZ1000R1 vintage decals...it is a strange, but true, fact that anything that is painted like a ELR will bring more money that it ought to.. So, are the pipes original? (if so, decent shape?)...if you are running 4into1 headers, are they Kerkers?...they will bring more than any other brand except OEM pipes. All that stated...the market for KZ750R1 is wildly variable. I have seen ELR-styled 750R1's go for US$3000+ and also seen very low mileage stock excellent condition KZ750R1's get no bids in a no-reserve auction. So there is your range. I would expect that your bike, in its present configuration and as a non-runner might bring US$500...assembled, running, and repainted...maybe US$1000-1500 more. The fundamental issue with the KZ750R1 is that while there weren't that many made (about 12,500), many have survived because they were very cool motorcycles...so, collector street value hasn't really increased much.
And then you have the confounding and confusing factors such as your location (bikes command different prices depending upon location) and time of year (bikes seem to be worth more in the spring in the northern United States...this effect is less down south)

I have considered going with the ELR colors but still a distant thought. I also really like the simple, straight forward look of a solid color but I do understand the feeling of seeing one with the decals!
The bike has a Bassani 4 into 1 exhaust. Still in good condition except for a few dings along the bottom, underneath the motor, and the muffler needs repacking.
As far as getting it running, 1 to 2 days would be a dream come true! Cam shafts still need to be installed and the motor timed and the carbs need to be broke apart and rebuilt.
So many little things that just add up. And difficult to do when I have 2 other running bikes in the garage to chose from
And your right 650ed, if I ever hear the thing start up I may never sell it.
Mcdroid, I live in Oregon and your very much correct on pricing depending on seasons. Here in Oregon, we riders become freaks right about this time of year!
Thank you all very much for the input so far!!!!! And any other opinions and ideas are greatly appreciated!

Mcdroid, have you ever had to re-pack the muffler on the Bassani?
