What do you guys think...should I go for it?
30 Mar 2010 19:40 - 30 Mar 2010 19:40
I've been looking for a 84 ZX900 A1 and you can't beat the price on this one, but not sure about taking on another project, especially one as involved as this one.
What do you guys think? How difficult of a job would this be to put her back on the road?

Probably means spun intake camshaft bearings, I guess.
The thing sounds like it has been highly abused. Even if you fixed the few things he mentions, how many hundreds of other things are also messed up?

those bikes when cared for and kept clean...are still around
as a guess
but the finish on em was like a gpz...if it was abused or left sitting...they go pretty quick...
wait for a clean one...they pop up for 14-2000
this one would be a sinkhole imo

"This is a basket case! i have two motors one has spun connection rods and two spun intake bearings case"...
Say it all, ABUSED riding conditions... Best assumption was this guys was into extreme riding or something (wheelies, tricks etc...).... Or these models are prone to breakage  ...
Spend the $600 on your Kawi or another KZ...
Just my 2 crap cents worth...

i'd jump all over it it comes with a brand new crank and more than enough engine parts to build at least one good motor and then part out the rest.

Hmmm - ok now you got me thinking. (Yes I'm easy. )
I've never completely busted open and rebuilt one of my big bike engines, just small single cylinders twice. So this would be a first and I'm sure a learning experience. Expect me to be posting like crazy when I get stuck.
Time to make a phone call.

man...if you have'nt bought it yet... maybe????consider why dude had two blown motors and is giving away a 900 $ crank and new filter kits$$$ to boot???....and why it sat 20 somthing yrs...it if it a easy fix????
i saw a whole z-1 in a rob borth vintage, racetrack frame with a yosh pipe, race spoked rims...derale oil cooler..steel lines, ,carbs,,ect,,,ect,complete...no history or knowledge by the current babysitter..ect,not running 350$$$ that was 350.oo!!!!!!!!!!!...last year..(and did not get in my car with a wrench and rope...DUOGHPP!!!).in San Fran... SO...????
i got a z-1e rolling chassis /motor and a complete (minus 300 in misc e-bay purchese/ parts) and 81 j-model standard..score!!..plus three boxes of z-1kz stuff for 500 last year ..
and now a running MKII this year for 600...very nice collectors bikes all of them imo....
you wanna become an e-bay parts shipper/seller...then by all means ,pull the trigger.........it would part out nice i bet and leave you with your own barn bike
but if it's gonna sit in your garage then another better deal pops up tomorrow..and your extra $ is tied into this anchor????.....
i'm not trying to be negative/but i'm not trying either, to buy more bikes unless they run and have real papers...the state of the economy and the economic forcast..dictate that more great unknown to the owners bikes that are tucked away in sheds/shops/garages/barns/basemants...ect... are gonna start to surface in the coming months/weeks/year...imo
good luck.....

Buddy had issues with bearings on his. Caused from many many wheelies, suspension was shot too. Abuse damages more than just the engine, something to consider....

Well I talked to the guy and really didn't find out anything new except that he's hurting for money so badly that his phone was gonna be shut off.
So I'm gonna take a look at it on Friday and we'll see what happens. I'll offer him a low number if I think I can do something with the bike, if not, I'll walk away.
