heated grips
19 Oct 2009 05:56
Here is my dillema. Where I live it gets cold...riding to work at 6 in the morning is cold on the hands up to mid June and starting again late August. I was thinking of buying these universal grip heaters. For the same money as a new pair of warm gloves I can get these grips and use my summer gloves, and still have some money to spare. Has anyone used grips like this? Do heated grips actually help, or am I better off just getting new gloves. Does anyone know if heaters like this will ruin my new rubber grips?

The main thing I wonder about is how hard is it to get grips over heaters? When the grips get warm, will they move around?

I just installed a set of Dual Star heated grips
www.dual-star.com/index2/Rider/heated_grip_kit1.htm
on my ZRX. They work great and actually get quite hot. Mine have the LO/OFF/HI switch as well but you can order a variable switch to regulate the heat if you wish.
Best way to get the old grips off, and back on, is to spray under them with WD40. They'll slide right off and when put back on do not move around as the WD is evaporated by the heat.
Make sure that you get the heat shrink wrap (or something similar) to put on the clutch side of the handlebar. Without it, you will lose a bunch of the heat to the bar. The throttle side doesn't need it because of the throtte tube.
Good luck.

Another Connie rider I know has
THESE
heated grips. I can attest that they work just fine - grips don't slip and the price seems very fair!

I have a set of "Hot Grips" on my ATV and LOVE them. Will reach 165 degrees with Muffs over them on high setting, very comfortable on those long rides through the woods. I think they make them for twist grip motorcycles also. Grips are included for ATV's. Easy install. Go to your local dealer to see what they have or can order. You will be pleased.

So the old KZ charging systems handle this extra bit of power requirement? I thought about getting them before but figured it wouldn't be able to handle the extra load.

I never thought of this, but I am adding a switch for my headlight, so turning that off (35 watts on low beam) would accomodate any extra power for the heaters

How would one upgrade their charging system to handle extra draw? I have a new stator (stock output) but would I need a better stator and better r/r?
I can turn my headlamp off during cold starting and during the day while running the heated grips, but I do occasionally ride at night and would like to use both heaters and headlight.
