Tires are worn out Thanks for your help
09 Sep 2009 09:37 - 12 Sep 2009 18:28
When do you change the air in the tires? I counted how many times my tires go around in one mile and I've got over three thousand miles already on the back one.I know the stale air weighs more and can cause more brake wear due to heavier stopping. Also lighter air increases gas mileage by about 2% per mile.My friend told me to used only compressed air from a electronic air pump and make sure I put in 1/2 pound more so when I disconnect the hose it will be close to the right amount. Any better ideas?

Stale air weighs more...huh? I've had same air in some tires for 20,000+ miles.
Also, I don't know how much I would worry about a half a PSI of pressure. I don't think you will ever notice unless you are racing, and maybe not even then.
Changing the air in your tires sounds like something you do when you replace the blinker fluid so that damn low blinker fluid light will stop flashing every time you turn the them on.

I might start using helium to improve fuel economy. (or maybe I should just diet and shed about 15 - 20 lbs.)

If you do switch to nitrogen gas instead of air it's a good idea to mix a little Glade air freshener in. That way if you run over a nail and your tire passes gas it won't offend anyone.

Why don't you fill them with hydrogen. That is the lightest gas you will find.

Re: Air change question

while others will laugh,it is only because they do not know the answer to your question, while i do!
After doing some checking i found that valantino rossi's bikes get the whole air in each tire flushed after each session....after every practice and before he goes out to set a qualifier lap,it's little known secret that old air not only begins to wheigh more but is less dynamic in suspension.
I change my air out before each ride and if there is a compressor handy at our destination, then i change it again before riding home,it makes a big difference.
