Value of 81 KZ1000 LTD
28 Aug 2009 07:47
I want a big comfy bike to put lots of highway miles on. I have a guy that wants to trade me his 83 Goldwing Aspencade for my kz1000.
I havent seen a picture of the bike yet or even know much about it other than that it has ~60k miles and just had the waterpump replaced.
My bike is in pretty nice shape with only 7k miles on it. Everything is in awesome shape except it needs new paint.
Do you guys think this is a fair trade if his wing is in good shape? What should my bike be worth about? What should his be worth? I think he is asking $1400 cash.
I am located in Nebraska since I know where a person lives can affect prices.
Is this goldwing going to be a pretty decent bike as far as comfort and reliability goes. I know to watch out for bad stators as you have to remove the engine to replace them. Anything else to watch out for?
Thanks guys.

You should post pics of both bikes for us to see. I would say your KZ is worth more than the wing is.
I have heard that parts are getting harder to find for the old wings.

Test drive it, and if you like it, trade..The 81,82 ltd's arent as sought after as 77-80's are. Ive seen near mint ones on ebay go for 1400 - 1600. Ive got an 82 myself i gave 1400 for. There is a kit that allows you to put a G.M. alternator on the wing if and when the stator goes bad, I know a guy with this setup..Good luck whichever way you decide...

Looked at the wing. No pictures but you can google what it looks like. It runs and drives. Tires are good. The body is fair with a few little cracks in the plastics.
The radio doesnt work. Some static comes through the cb but no headset to really try it out. The air compressor doesnt run. The rear brake caliper is seized.
He claims to only get 25-30 mpg doing 75. Maybe dirty carbs? Although it seems to run ok.
It definitely needs a little TLC but it will get me to the winter when I can work on it.

i rode a 76 wing this weekend a low mileage original. compared to my 74 z1 it was like riding a barge the suspension was really soft and cushy but push it at all and the thing wiggled all over the place not my kind of bike that is for sure.

If you want the wing, give him the cash and keep your kz.
then you have 1 for cruising and 1 for fun.

I made the trade. Keep in mind 60k miles on a wing is nothing. They commonly go to 150-200k miles with little more than routine maintenance. The bike handles well. Suspension is not overly soft unless I want it to be. Doesnt wiggle around at all. This thing rides better than I was expecting.

We shall see. I have no doubts that the wing will last just as long (probably longer) and be just as trouble free as the kz would have. I get the most joy out of taking long trips down the open road and several weekend excursions and this wing just seems to cater to my needs a little better.
It is pretty crazy though because when I got my first bike at 18 i promised myself i would never get a big dressed out bike. Now I am only 20 and pretty happy with my trade.

I discovered today that all of the suspension has been upgraded to progressive suspension. That is why it rode so nice. I suspect it is a lot firmer than other wings.

i've rode a couple of wings in good shape and their nice to ride for sure.
recently i took a 300 mile ride on my kz which is rigid ride and while walking away streching my back into place wondering why i went so far and then i turned around and saw what i was riding. enough said.
