And when you do forget...the guys here will always help you remember
I also found using the parts diagrams on Kawasaki.com can really help take some of the mystery away.

seanbarney41, the sprocket cover appears to be from a 76-79KZ750 Twin.
Looks like the rollers, pins and springs are missing from your starter clutch.

Thanks for the good info Rainman. I was looking at the parts diagram on Bike Bandit and it looked like they had different names for the rollers and pins. I couldn't quite figure it out from the vague diagram. Anybody know a good source for these parts? (i.e. rollers, pins, springs, and that needle bearing too!) I should probably just call Z1 Enterprises. I couldn't find those parts on their website. Anybody need a sprocket cover for the kz750 twin? I'd be happy to trade for one for a kz1000.

so I did a compression test. I got about 130psi on 1, 3, and 4. #2?...zero
Did a leakdown test and air was just rushing out of the exhaust. Hmmm, checked valve clearance on number 2 exhaust, it was ok. Decided to tear down more to see and there was good news and bad news...bad news?... valve is bent. Good news?...andrews 2x cams, decent looking port work, 1075 pop up pistons.

more pics now that I know I'm posting right
I know you can't see how bent this valve is in the pic, but here is a look anyway

so I got the head rebuilt by a local shop, Action Cycle in Portage MI. The owners,Tommy and his wife are definately hip to old Kaws, as they used to drag race one or more Z1's and kz's. I got a new valve, a couple guides, and a valve job, with new seals too. I checked piston to cylinder clearance with feeler gauges and they look ok. I know this is not the most accurate way to measure but combined with my earlier compression numbers, I think I'm gonna put this motor back together and run it for a while.
Next up is to set valve clearances on the bench. All I got for a valve spring tool right now is this
I'm thinking I'm gonna want something a little tricker for that job. I have looked at a couple things Z1 Enterprises offers but it's hard to evaluate how they work from the pictures. Suggestions would be great here and I guess I got more research to do.

A drill press and a windowed socket works good for removing/installing valves, just put another socket under face of valve to hold it in place

Mine is simalr to what you have but is a pipe split lengthwise. I have a shim bucket with a hole in the center that it presses on. Works great I think but it is all I have ever used.
