Newcomer Pilot Jet Question
25 Jul 2025 11:21
Howdy. This is my first post. Name is Daryl. Just getting familiar with KZRider. Its already helped some so hats off to all. Here's my deal...83 KZ 550C. I pulled it out of the woods from the neighbor. Got it to the point where is starts, runs, but doesn't quite have enough power to pull its own weight down the driveway. Stalls even if I rev up well beyond normal. Checked plug appearance. 1 and 3 look pretty good. Light brown/tan color. 2 and 4 black/sooty. Also, I can start and run it for say 5/10 minutes. Then check temps at the exhaust pipes. 1 and 3 read about 180 deg F. 2 and 4 about 100 deg . Coils and plug wires check good. Pretty sure its going to be carbs so I'm going back through to clean, spray, blow, etc. Btw, these are TK carbs. Two questions. First, is see no air screw on these carbs. The location where I believe they would be located appears to be capped. So are these TK carbs equipped with no air screw OR am I to somehow remove the cap to expose the screw? Secondly, regarding the pilot screw/jet...is the center passage, the one that goes along the length of the screw supposed to be open and clear the entire length of the screw? The small openings on the narrow end are free and clear. Seems to me I should be able to pass light the entire length of the screw. Might seem like a dub question, but for a self trained, wanna be/don't wanna be mechanic I'd rather ask. Hopefully this makes sense and many thanks to whomever may respond!

Welcome aboard, and thanks for saving another KZ from oblivion.
Be sure that the secondary coil wires are connected to the proper spark plugs. One should connect to cylinders 1 & 4, the other to cylinders 2 & 3.
Have the carburetors been completely torn down and carefully cleaned with carburetor cleaner?
There is a bucket-load of info here, including on the TK carbs.

Thanks TexasKZ. Yes, the coils are properly connected. I went through the carbs. Only things I didn't touch were the jet needles. I just answered my own question about the pilot jet. Went back out to the shop and managed to get the pilot jets on both 2 and 4 open and clear. Hoping that makes a nice difference. I'll dig a little deeper in the forum to see if I can find something on those caps. Doesn't make sense to me that these cards would NOT have an air mixture screw. Thanks again.

I do not know as much about the 550s as I do the 650s, but if the carbs on your machine are not CV type carb then yes as I understand it they do have air screws and had a plug placed over them. Though the attached is for the vm24 carbs that came stock on the 650s it should give you an idea of how to remove the plugs.

The air screw is hiding under a plug. They need to be removed so you can insure that the passageway is clear and to replace the orings which are likely hard and leaky.

Really appreciate TexasKZ and gd4now chiming in. I went ahead before even waiting to see your replies and drilled out one of the caps with a small bit. Sure enough, there was the air screw. But it was great to get the confirmation from you both. I also went ahead and ordered the K&L rebuild kits. Wish I had never messed with the eBay stuff. Could have saved myself lots of time. I am anxiously waiting for them to arrive and, heat wave or not here in NC, I plan to go back through them asap. Thanks again !!!
