First Post rotor replacement advise
10 Jul 2025 06:48 - 10 Jul 2025 12:44
Hello all, I am a new member and need some advise as to the rotor replacement process. I have a 1976KZ900 and will be installing a new rotor. I've read many of the related posts and of course reviewed my Clymer manual, but can anyone give me some tips, things to watch out for? Clymer seems to go somewhat beyond simply removing the rotor in their instructions. Overall the job does not seem to be that difficult but I have thought that before about many things.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated. I will post a pic soon of my bike.,

Welcome aboard!
Why do you want to replace it?
I recommend getting a genuine Kawasaki factory service manual. It will have the procedures specific to your model. There may be a copy in the filebase here.
Also, be sure you have a secure way to raise the front of the motorcycle off the ground. I use an Abba Superbike stand. abbastandsusa.com/
Pay very close attention to how things come apart, especially--
1. The speedometer drive. It must be properly oriented for re-installation so that it is held in place by the lugs. If it is not installed properly, it will spin around and rip the drive cable apart and may destroy itself. It is not at all complicated, but it is really important.
2. The wheel spacers. They must be reinstalled on the proper side of the wheel and in the proper orientation, otherwise the wheel cannot be reinstalled or will be terribly off-center.
3. The axle clamps. They must be installed in a particular way and are side-specific.
4. Torque settings. The manual lists torque settings for all these various parts. Pay attention to them.
5. The rotor (disk). It is very easy to bend it or damage it in other ways, handle it with a great deal of care. Do not lay the wheel down in a way that makes the rotor contact the ground or in any way support the weight of the wheel.
6. Do not get any oil or grease on the rotor or the brake pads. That includes oily fingerprints.

Hi, it often helps when taking things apart to use your phone and take photos so you can refer back to them. Welcome from New Zealand 👍
