Hey Guys/Gals (First Post)

Over the weekend i lost the only key I had to my 1982 KZ550 LTD and I have replace the ignition switch and minimum the key. The question I have is that i found a 1982 KZ550 ignition switch and key but it doesn't specify compatibility with LTD so Im hesitant to make the purchase.

Does anyone know if the KZ550A/Sport ignition switches are compatible with KZ550 LTD?
Or even better does anyone know of a website or store that has the capability of replacing just the key?

Any answers would be helpful.

From the diagrams at Partzilla the 550A & 550-Ltd have the same ignition switch but you should double-check the x-ref.

Replacement key. There should be a key code stamped on the ignition switch. the seat lock & helmet lock should be stamped with the same code. KZR topic w pic . KZR member rstnick might be able to make a key for you. A good locksmith should be able to make a key from the code. Also, there are keys available on eebbaayy.

Key blank that may work. Ilco KA14 X103

They are not Fort Knox lock cylinders, you could probable get any key blank the same dimensions and it would work without cutting. R

Look for the Z series key code # (Z5001~Z6000), then see if someone local can make it.
Check ebay for an original, and if no luck, send me a message as I can cut them and mail it to you.

I went ahead and called a locksmith and when he asked me for the key code I couldn't find it on the ignition (It seems really dull and worn so unless its somewhere else on the ignition switch I don't think I can get it cut again) and I had separate keys for the gas tank so I'm hesitant to use that code. I've had this bike for about two months (my first bike) and I never followed through with getting a duplicate before this happen so I'm back to square one.

Would anyone know if this linked ignition switch would be compatible? It says its for 1982 KZ550 Sports & Spectre but I have a 1982 KZ550 LTD. or where I could get one locally in Phx.

That ignition switch & part number look like something from the 70s, perhaps from a 650. I would find the correct part number at Partzilla or Kawasaki.com, then search eebbaayy to find a matching ignition switch. There's probably an emgo switch that looks the same as yours. Or try Z1Enterprises.com --- they probably have an Emgo.

Seat lock. Can you open the seat?

The gas tank is not keyed. Any key should be able to open it on a 550, even a house key.

The seat lock and ignition should have been the same code if no one replaced it.

Like Martin said, the one in your link is not for a 550.
