81 650 Pickup coil

I have been having problems with my bike dying after it gets hot. During my exploration into why this was happening, I tested my pickup coils (ign) and found the 1-4 coil to have infinited resistance. The 2-3 pickup is within range at 427 Ohms.

This brings me to my question, Other than OE used (which I'm having trouble sourcing), what options do I have for replacement pickup(s)? I can't find specifics on how the Dyna S works, other than the bits I found here, but was wondering if I could use their setup in place of the OE ones. (I'm getting the feeling its not a direct swap)

It also occurred to me that I could use a somewhat different style pick-up, from another bike, but would have to figure out how to mound it on the timing plate. I'm not exactly confident in my ability to align it exactly with the old one. Has anyone tried this? I considered that I could find a plate from a different bike, with pickups already clocked, and mount it in place of my facory one, but there are a lot of variables to overcome there too.

Any ideas? Any of my thinking way off base?

Valve clearances out of spec (i.e., too tight) can cause bike dying after it gets hot.

Good Fortune! :)

The Dyna S ignition should work on the 81 650. I think you'd need to also get the green Dyna coils.
Z1Enterprises.com --- KZ650-H1 --- Dyna-S

Z1Enterprises.com --- KZ650-H1 --- Dyna 3.0 ohm

The KZ650-H1 CSR has a 3-phase charging system (3 yellow wires from the alternator).

You can use any KZ pickup that looks like the one you have. They are interchangeable. Pay attention to the screws. Some are steel and some are brass. They should not be swapped.

You can even use two of the same pickups (same color wires) but then splice the wires as follows:
Red corresponds to blue.
Black corresponds to yellow.

The wires will come out on top instead of the bottom, so you will just have to route the wires carefully, and may have to extend them.

But you can get pickups from any inline-four KZ that had mechanical advance.

In case you have the magnets off, here is how to determine how they go:

You can use a Dyna S, but that eliminates the existing pickups and igniter, but as Martin said, you would then have to get new coils too.

Martin, does the 81 650 use a 3-phase stator, or 1-phase?
If 1-phase, there is a small risk of overloading the charging system with the Dyna S. It wastes much more power than the standard ignition. If it's 3-phase, then it should not be an issue.

Everyone out there with single bad pickups should get together and combine their good pickups. It's jsut a matter of two screws and splicing two wires.

You might try these numbers for the Pulsing Coils(Pickups) for the electronic Ignition
The pulsing coil # is 59026-1133 and replaces the older # 1002, 1012 which were used from the MKII motors until the 2005 P24.
