Not really. First, dielectric grease is not necessarily thermal transfer paste.

I used thermal paste, but I don't think it is absolutely necessary. I still recommend it because it shouldn't hurt, and most modules come with a smll package of thermal paste, but you would probably get away without it.

The reason it is needed on a car is because a car uses a much more strenuous duty cycle, along with heavy current-limiter use. Neither is the case on a KZ. The duty cycle is only about 33% at most, and more importantly, the current-limiter does not get used much if at all. On a car, the HEI is enclosed inside the distributor, on the engine, so it will cook. On the bike, it's not really near much engine heat, and gets much more air.

I've run HEI modules with minimal heatsink, and no thermal paste, for many hours without them getting much more than slightly warm. On a car, it is a totally different story.

A good themal paste/heatsink compound can be bought at Radio Shack, it's called "Artic Siver", a high density, polysnythetic thermal compound in a small, syringe applier.

I just installed the new coils. I don't see how the positive wire connection could short out onto the frame as others have suggested. I put my positive leads on the top screw to the coils and they are not close to anything really. It seems that I have plenty of room in between the terminals and the frame/and or coil mounts.

My only concern would be arcing to the frame from your coil towers...it happened to me when I mounted my coils pointing up. Mine were really close though...almost touching. They put on quite a light show in the dark!

For some reason my coils fit on the bike using the outside mounting holes giving plenty of distance from the screw and the mounting spacer.

According to Kawasaki, the 1982 KZ1100 D1 Spectre uses a mechanical advancer, so yes, you should be able to use the HEI igniter mod.

Here is a pick of my coils and the mounts. Looks like plenty of room between the connector and the coil mount spacer.

Here are some pictures of the HEI Mod.

I haven't had a chance to turn it over yet and see if she works.

For moisture exclusion, and some vibration control, get some clear Silicone RTV(Room Temperature Vulcanizing)compound, and overcoat the screw terminals on your ignition coils. The RTV can be taken off by peeling with your fingers, or a blunt wooden tool(like a popsicle stick).
