I have been having lots of problems with hard starting when the bike has been sitting for a day or so. Just the last couple of times at an idle it will begin to fade till it is rev'd up then has good power. There was a electronic module in place of the points with the original coils. The primary on both coils test good and the secondary on one tests good, the secondary on the other will not give me a reading. With the meter set at auto range it just keeps scrolling and will not lock on a number. I do not know who made the point module but check the picture below maybe someone has run across it before the only marking is a 66 or it could be a 99 on the back.
My question is this. I want to put in new 3 ohm Dyna coils and either the original breaker plate with points and condenser or the Dyna-S module. What would you suggest, will the Dyna module be worth it????

Thank you all.

I have no clue as to what brand that ignition is, but I definately recommend going with the DYNA-S.

Their "set it and forget it" claim is pretty accurate.
I installed one on my '78 KZ650 and simply "eye-ball" set the timing, and it's run flawlessly for over 5 years/40K miles so far. :)

The old system might have been made by Boyer or Gerex. A newer Dyna S will reduce the starting and running problems a lot along with doing the Wired George relay coil modification.

When replacing the ignition pick ups consider the coils and spark plug wires as they age and lose ability to transform or conduct electrical energy.

Yeah I had checked the voltage at the coil supply and I am only getting 10 volts to the coils. I went to the WG website and looked at his mod it looks good. I think I will go the whole route. My plugs get fouled after a couple of hundred klicks. The carbs have been set and cleaned, air filter is good. Thanks for the tips.

It sort of looks like a Boyer/Brandsden{?} I had on a 650 Triumph. That was 20 years ago though. It went bad after a year. It ran the coils in series I think. Ive been running the same Dyna S for 30 some years on my KZ900 {1105} motor with the green Dyna coils & grey Dyna wires

I have nothing but good things to say about my Dyna. I was blaming my coils and was probably chasing wire loom demons until converting to the Zypher loom.

Having the ability to mod the retard curve and rev limiter is slick. Setting the timing is a breeze.

Sounds like you have an intermittent in the secondary of one of your coils so I would replace the coils first and see if that fixes it. Your ignition system looks very similar to a Dyna-S, and my guess is it may be working just fine, but is masked by the coil issue.

If it has failed, I will add my vote for the Dyna-S - just installed one on my '78 650B2 and it runs much better throughout the range! I also went with the green Dyna coils so that I could replace the plug wires easily!

Well I broke down and ordered the Dyna-S and new coils with wires. I am also making up the WG low voltage mod. I believe this should solve my problem.

Thanks for all your comments. I'll let you know how it turns out when I get it in and installed.

I have the dyna s ignition and coils on my bike no complaints. Ever. I can't understand why anyone would torture themselves with the points as you have to bugger with them to get them right and always have to replace them. Make your life easier and improve the breed as you go. I have to see about the wg coil mod i hear everyone talking about. and the Zypher loom? Never heard of that. If I can't google it maybe kzr could further enlighten us. I will be in need of a new wiring harness with the restoration of my bike and would like to have many different options to choose from that greatly improve the wiring from stock as I have heard the charging system on these bikes is not up to par although I haven't had any real problems yet.

Cow_Man, if you need any help getting that Dyna-S installed hit me up. Not only do I have the same bike as you but I just put a Dyna-S on mine just last week. Also, I have really good article on how to set the timing correctly on the Dyna-S with a inductive timing light (written by WiredGeorge no less!). The timing instructions that Dyna gives you kind of suck. PM me if you need any help.
