I just installed a Dyna-S on my 1978 KZ650. There is only one small step that I need a little help on. I need to find out where I am supposed to plug in my oil sensor wire. Anybody know of an easily accessible junction where I can drop the factory connection and plug in the Dyna sensor wire? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hook it up to the feed wire to the coils

If you take off the right side cover, you will find a connector in the oil pressure switch wiring. I had to make a trip to AutoZone for the correct connector (the Dyna one was incorrect). I ran the Dyna harness the same route, and used small zip-ties to hold the oil wire to the harness.

By the way I do NOT recommend using the crimp-on wire splices they provide. You can find a hook-in to the switched power near the coils and use that (again, connectors from AutoZone). Those crimp-on devices cause more trouble than they cure (they knick the conductors and cause fatigue failures).

mtkawboy. thanks for the link. These are the same instructions that the Dyna ignition came shipped with. The only thing Dyna says about the oil pressure switch wire is to just to "connect the blue wire where the original wire plugged in". Well, the connection behind the points plate is a no-brainer. It was the other end of that wire I was having a hard time finding. I found it - it is just difficult to get to. I pulled the right side cover and saw the oil pressure wire hanging down just to the right of where the cover was. I think I am just going to have to unplug the original oil pressure wire just so I can have enough slack to pull it up far enough so that I can connect the Dyna oil pressure wire to it. That's the plan anyways. Thanks for the info guys!

Just take the tank off and tap in where the hot wire from the ignition & kill switch branches off to each coil. Its yellow & red on a 900/1000 but I dont know what color it is on a 650. Your Clymer or shop manual should tell you. I didnt realise you had an instruction sheet when I sent the link. It shows a red wire in my 82 750 shop manual

You wouldn't believe the wars on UseNet and the various forums that have been fought over soldering vs crimping :woohoo:

Either way will work as long as it's done properly, it's just that most people don't do either one right. Both should be supported on either side of the connection to prevent fatigue failure.

Unfortunately the 3M (some call suitcase connectors)are the bane of trailer wiring people as they will weaken the joint and later because the connection is exposed to the weather corrosion sets in and............failure!

I prefer the crimp on splice you then apply heat to and it shrinks and seals the joint.

www.waytekwire.com,and www.wiringproducts.com sell crimp/heatshrink splices in several wire gauges.

Mine is soldered with rosin core solder along with the coil mod and it works fine. I use the bare conectors, squeeze them on, then solder and put a heat shrink over the works

Sorry - I was talking about those "instant splice" devices that drive a "V" shaped knife into the wire(s)! Technically they are called "insulation displacement" splices. Avoid like the plague!

As to soldering/crimping - yep, I know the pros and cons of both and I also like those crimp-on butt-splice devices that have heat-shrink on them, they make a nicely finished connection!

Mine originally had one of those blue splce deals on it that worked but I didnt like it that way because of the possable problems with them

Truth be told, I did use the vampire tap that came with the Dyna-S. It will be just temporary though. I plan on installing the wiredgeorge coil mod along with a new set of Dyna Coils and 8mm spark plug wires. Once all of my parts come in then I will totally rework all of my wiring (including the Dyna-S) and do it up the right way. I will probably go with the solder/shrinkwrap method.

I forgot to mention that I measured the voltage going to my coils and I am getting only 10volts! I can't believe that it was this low even with a fuly charged brand-new battery! The wiredgeorge mod will fix that.
