i have been reading about ignition boosters- they up the voltage to the coils i guess thus helping with spark at the high rpm? now the question is are they in addition to a dyna s (or 3). or they instead of? do they hotten up the spark at low rpm or only high? and are they not a good idea on street applications? drag only?

No, No snake oil, They are real. I forget the price of them but around $40 each they go into your plug wires and are made by Nology here is the link.

You can use the "hot wires" or the "powercore" coil amplifiers".

I can vouch for nology plug wires: I bought a car motor that had a set on it, put them on my current car that was running well enough but was old and worn out, and felt a noticeable difference. And it was in the higher RPM, strange but true.

I don't see the cost being worth the result though: unless you may be looking for that last 1/10th of a second.

These are the spec's for my bike's Coils:

- OEM Original: 10-12 KV @ 12 VDC
- Dyna, Black: >30 KV @ 12 VDC

Based on this, I'm with gpzrox. For my needs, they would not be cost effective. But I'm not sure where you're coming from and what your objectives are. Just my 2 cents worth.

Best of success.

The ignition boosters from Dyna are legit. They use the points to trigger a transistorized ignitor. This is an old trick and is tried and true. Basically it's the same thing as the Dyna III ignition, but uses the points instead of a new timing plate with magnetic pickups.

If you want to make a cheap one, I have a design for a similar device. It requires a little experience, though, to build it:
www.geocities.com/loudgpz/GPZheiModForPoints.html

As far as the other types of boosters;
For the most part, the amount of spark energy shouldn't affect the running of a well-designed engine (KZ's fall into the "well-designed" category). If it does, then the ignition may be faulty, or the engine may be in poor condition, or the carburetion may be improper. The solution would be to fix the real problem. A Dyna S produces massive amounts of energy when combined with new 3-ohm coils. If a booster makes a noticeable difference with a good Dyna S ignition, then most likely the battery voltage is low or the carbs are not right, or the engine has a problem.

so there is no advantage if you were running a dyna ignition already? only if your are running points?

Lou, this looks like something I want to build. It allows me to keep my points & my machanical advance while eliminating the maintenance aspect of points plus it gives me a fall-back path to the original design. :)

If you have built this circuit do you have a photo. Also, if you have installed it do you have a photo. Any pointers. Thanks.

oops, I forgot to update that webpage at the bottom.

I have it installed and working beautifully on a KZ400, but I don't have photos at the moment. It's on my buddy's bike. He says it starts on one kick now, and he gets no weird stumbles or backfires like he used to. We mounted it under the gas tank for water protection. If you look into the space between the tank and the steering column you can see the little green led flashing on and off. Neat.

Next time I have access to the bike I'll take some photos.

My main advice would be to experiment a little first. Set it up on a work bench using a battery and a spare coil and plugs. You can simulate the whole thing in a relaxed atomsphere. You definitely don't want to be rushed when trying to build and troubleshoot anything. You can simulate the points with a push button. If you have never built circuits before, you should get a breadboard. Its a board with a million holes. It lets you build circuits without having to solder anything.

Start with the basic circuit first. Once its working you can try to add on the time-out device and LED etc.
