I think I paid $48+ tax for mine. Wouldn't use anything else.

Finally got round to fitting the air filter today as was busy over the weekend meeting my newborn son :) was going to get him to help me but think it will be a while before he can hold a spanner heh.

Anyway i fitted it and its definately made a difference to the mix/power delivery but its still hitting a wall at 5/6k and only getting around 60/65 mph out of it, and the revs still drop back to idle quite slowly. Bearing in mind i've got the other set of carbs on that i purchased recently that have slightly different set up, Im going to put the originals back on tomorrow and turn the fuel screws back to stock and see if that helps.

Anybody got any other ideas what it could be if that doesnt help? something i might be missing?
Just to recap heres what i have checked/done thus far:

  • Replaced carb to air box rubbers
  • checked for airbox/air inlet manifold leaks
  • checked timing
  • checked electrics, coils etc
  • cleaned carbs several times
  • relpaced carbs with new set
  • changed main jets up and back again
  • checked sparks, white to blue colour sparks, seem to consistently fire ok, no misses
  • replaced damaged diaphgram
  • removed US gas exhaust recycling system

not sure what else there is to check other than valve clearances? Patton mentioned to make sure getting fat blue sparks, not sure how fat they should be but mine are blue to white coloured sparks. If a weak spark was the issue would the spark plugs be fouled? mine look fine when you pull em, white to greyish no blistering or fouling.

Still stumped on this one :S

Congratulations on the arrival of your son. A life changing event for sure.

A pity the air filter was not the final fix and sorry to say that I am out of ideas.

Could result from an improperly functioning timing advancer.

Good Fortune! :)

Thanks and yeah sure is! :)

No worries, thanks for all your help been much appreciated :)

I put the original carbs back on and same difference but runs a bit sweeter as the jetting is correct. i did notice something new though, there is a loud high pitched ticking coming from the right hand side top of the engine, valves or tensioner maybe? i know valves are meant to tick, but this sounds quite loud and high.
Im at the point of giving up on it and chucking it in the shop though because its quite frustrating wasting money and getting nowhere yourself. just hate having to put it in and then potentially be given a bill for hundreds of pounds only to have them do a bunch of unrelated crap and not solve the problem, Ive had that before its bloody annoying. but i think this one has got me completely beat and just gonna have to bite the bullet :(

I checked the timing advancer and the timing with a strobe gun, all seems fine :/

I'd watch the timing light as it goes up to the RPM range. The light might start to flicker at the problem speed. If it doesn't, the cam chain might be one tooth off.

I like the sticker it comes with. STOP DO NOT THROW THIS FILTER AWAY. Life time filter, clean and reuse.

So rev it right up past where the 3500 timing advancer tops out? or just to there? is it easy to readjust the cam chain if it is that?

Yeah i have a car too but my wife uses it quite a bit so be handy to have the bike running properly. id like to get it sorted in time for spring too so i can go on some long rides. Havent checked tensioner or camchain yet, not sure how to be honest?
