Frame welding/mods finished and ground (along with my thumb :) and the seat pan is started. Got the first 2 layers of glass on and curing, after they are done I have some foam to add to shape it a little and to help reinforce it and then 2 more layers of glass to add.

Then its on to sand-blasting everything. One question, how hard is it to remove the swingarm bearings? I think that I will have to pull them prior to powder coating and just wanted to see if it is worth it.

Another question, I am thinking of cutting out the gauge cluster (though I will have to build a little key mount) and I was thinking of replacing it with the Acewell speedo/tach/lights combo. Does anyone know how those mount up? If it clamps to the bars I may take off the gauge cluster mounts and have a smooth polished top triple clamp.

Oh, also going with the all aluminum wheels with the accents polished and everything else the dull sandblasted look. Then I will clear coat over all of it to seal out the crud.

Anyways, back to check on the glass, and rebandage my thumb :). Thanks for the help so far. I will post pics of the seat pan when I get it all glassed and cut down to size. Then I just have to do the cover and the seat is ready to go!

I cornered three mechanics here on a smoke break, all ride and wrench on bikes. It's a heavy equipment shop, one guy does hydraulic generators and electro mags on excavators, the others are semi mechanics so all have a pretty good background.

They all seem to think that it's a bad ground. Even though i have a heavy cable from the battery to a clean spot on the aluminum motor, that shows no resistance, they think i should run a ground to the frame on bare steel. The fact that the whole frame is encapsulated in powdercoat makes this somthing i hate to try, i am going to grind off a spot on the frame somewhere, and run a really short ground wire to it and see what happens.

They also think the the coils sitting on pcoated frame are not grounded enough. The small amount of pcoat scraped off by the bolts that hold the coils to the frame is not good enough.

So tonight I'm going to run another ground to the frame in addition to the ground to that motor that has run the bike for 2300 miles since rebuild. And I'm going to run ground leads from the coils to the battery too and see what happens.

The mechanic that was the most outspoken said that all the crazy fluctuating voltages show him that the electrical system is not grounded and is looking for a ground, or may even be grounding back through the Acewell speedometer or some other path that is not nearly enough to carry the amps of the running bike.

It sounds good to me, at least i've got somthing to try. If it doesn't work i'm going to drag one of the mechanics home with me tomorrow to have a look at it.

I guess the meter showing me big volts between the negative battery term and the frame is enough to show that the system is not grounded right. I fired up my Triumph and checked from it's battery negative and to the frame and it showed 0.00.

Will advise, thanks for all the comments - keep them coming I might need to go down one of these obscure avenues if the additional grounds from frame to battery do not help.

Thanks guys, wish me luck I am so ready for this to be over!

bah! badkaw is just that... bad, and a kaw. 8^P

never mind him... lots of projects, but nothing that runs.

D'OH!

yes, soon. very soon. see my email from earlier today too...

KZG1, sweet. shoot me a closeup of what you removed from it, as i was thinking of doing the same. i want to stash the key/ign switch somewhere outta sight. just to clean things up. i'm gonna run an acewell digital setup, and probably sink it into the back of the light shell.

google rake and trail calculator. there are a couple good ones out there that will do a much better job at explaining it than i can.

Hey everyone. I just thought I'd post my project here.

I'd love to tell you what I'm doing with my bike but ....I don't know yet.

I'm gonna paint her and I'm gonna change up the rims to the mags. (If I can find a rear...I have the front)

I'm gonna switch up the speedometer/tach to an acewell digital. and I am gong to change up the headlights to a set of Duals.

Other than that...I'm just playing it by ear. It took me 10 hours yesterday to get it from a functioning bike to a duffel bag full of "what the hell" and a frame and a motor.

Wish me luck.

here's some pics. this is the original shape of my bike

No no, i don't need it today. I'm just incredibly annoyed that old bikes on the street are apparently part bikes for anyone! It's also a bit odd, because I have a acewell tach on the thing, and it wasn't touched....so random. But thanks for the link, that's precisely what I"m looking for.

And, why not keep fueling it. There was a Triton in Streetfighters magazine, (supposedly the epitome of cafe racers, though I would disagree, thinking the last DBD34 Goldstar is the ultimate cafe racer "of that era"). A Triton Streetfighter/Cafe Racer!? Featherbed, Preunit Triumph cases, Manx style tanks with late sportbike frontend and 3 spoke wheels. Clipons, fairing...in Streetfighters. The definitions of cafe racer and streetfighter are not carved in stone

So now it's a streetfighter because it's got some modern parts?

Well crap! My KZ650 has an acewell DIGITAL speedo/tach! Must be a streetfighter! WOO HOO!!!

Thanks sheik.

I'm going to give that a try this evening.
I really love this thing other than the wrapped wire part. *EDIT*I hooked it up like you described and it's rock solid now!!!!! Woooohooooo!!!!! I love this gauge!!!!!!! Thanks man!!!:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

the tach on my Acewell works perfect now that I have put a ring terminal on the end of the now 8" yellow tacho pickup lead, and attached it to my Dyna coils on the Dyna-S side, (not the steady 12v side).

Rock steady, 100% perfect, I'm dead serious. The coil around the plug wire is a total joke.

Also, for my KZ1000, the 1.0 RPM divider (or i guess lack thereof a divided) is the one that is correct.

1000000% dead nuts perfect
