Ok, got this idea from another post. My controls are pretty much worn out. Especially the kill / starter switch. It works but I have to wiggle it every time I crank the engine. The horn button is the same way only much worse.

I've seen the prices for replacement controls and Dang! Would converting over to Harley controls be cheaper? And I take it the handle bar sizes are different? What all would be involved in swapping over?

Thanks!

Harley bars :P are 1", kaw are 7/8"

are your wires from the controls inside the bars?? they might have a bare spot where they go inside and it might be shorted out.

I've been looking in to the same thing. I have found that I can get a NEW complete left and right set on HD controls all chrome even the buttons for $220.00 (very nice custom look.) They use a 1" bar.
You can get a 1" drag bar for around $20.00
There are two option for connecting them to your bike.

1) You can file down 1/16 the top and bottom of the stock clamp.
2) You can get a set of adapters mini-risers, they are about 2" tall and one end is 7/8 and the top is 1".

I bought a set of adapters. I have not bought anything else yet. You will need to think about how you will connect the break lines and throttle. I haven't figured that out yet as I don't have the parts yet.

I don't think the wires are inside the bars. I'd have to go look again!:P I might try to just take the controls I have apart and see if I can repair/fix them. Or fabricate something myself. I'll let ya all know what happens! :P

I have had good luck taking the electrical controls apart, and cleaning up the contacts with steel wool and alcohol. I usually lube things up with some electrical contact grease. This is, I believe, a more time and cost effective solution than converting over to controls designed for another bike. But then, I am a cheap SOB, plus I enjoy making the old things work.

I'm with the ape on this one. Take your controls apart and clean them. Mine may not be chrome plated, but they work just fine.

Besides, I wouldn't want any Hardley parts on my bike, unless maybe it was some 13.5" Sporty shocks...

I take my switches apart and clean them also. So far it's always worked good.

Its nothing to take the switches apart. The starter switch is prone to problems due to its poor design. It can be fixed with a little contact cleaner and as was mentioned some electrical contact grease. You can also repaint them if they are looking worn. Just use some model paint and simple spray paint.
