Your frame number as shown is 046217. That number falls within the 1977 KZ650-B1 frames as shown at the models.kz650.info/index.htm site. The red paint is absolutely normal for a 1977 KZ650 as it was one of the two colors available on the 1977 KZ650-B1 models; the other color was green. That same site shows that your engine number BE092109 appears to be from a later bike. Take a look at the left side of the engine and compare it to the images below to see if the engine is that of a 1977 model. Ed

650ed... your more of the cc bike an expert then I. I see his serial number could land in the ‘77 or ‘79? It’s to low for a ‘78

I suspect there an error in the 1979 serial number. There is a very easy way for him to tell if the bike is a 1977 or 1979. The 1977 KZ650-B rider's foot pegs are bolted to the frame with 1 bolt each. The 1979 KZ650-B foot pegs are bolted to the frame with 2 bolts each. Ed

to me that looks like a 1979 frame per 650ed's post... but it looks like a 1978 generator cover.

Thank you all for the advice and clarity.

Would any of you suspect that I have a replacement engine or simply a manufacturing overlap in this case?
