Ive got a cable drive,a cable and a 160 speedo. I guess I could remove my elec. drive, hook this one up and answer all our questions, but somebody should have an answer here without going to that much effort.Im too lazy.HELP.lol.bj
I have been looking into cable drive, electronic pickups and associated speedometers. The cable drives all have the same part number (checked on kawasaki.com/parts diagrams), so there are no different gear ratios on the drives. I have an 18" instead of a 19" front wheel on my Z1000A, and was hoping to use the drive off of a KZ1000Police. No dice. The gearing inside the speedo is different between the two. For all models with the same front wheel diameter, all gearing ratios in drives and speedos should be the same.

As I wrote earlier in this thread, I successfully swapped the original 85mph speedo for a 160mph one, and it works fine. Both are cable driven, and I did not change the sending unit at the wheel.

Wonder where's the pic KZ1000CSRman intended to post.
Maybe got scared and ran for cover.

Hahaha guys....In the manual, it says the "J, K, and B models are equipped with an electric tach, speedometer, and odometer." So it must mean that the M model have the cable driven stuff. Is this correct?

Correct. The M is all cable driven (although I have converted mine to an electronic tach after installing GPz cams with no tach gear)

A cable speedometer drive unit on the left side of front axle has a protruding male thread designed to accept and spin the lower end of the speedometer cable which connects at its top end to the underside of a cable operated speedometer.

If the speedometer itself has a male threaded protrusion on its underside, that is where a cable drive attaches.

Finding either a speedometer drive designed for a spinning cable attachment or finding a speedometer with a protruding male thread on its underside, or usually both (such as the CSR), means that the speedometer is cable driven (not electrically driven).

A speedometer without a male threaded protrusion on its underside is most likely electrically driven.

Good Fortune! :)
