Stator coil output?

Hey KZ'ers ,

I need to know what the proper stator coil output should be for a 1978 KZ650B with an electronic ignition.

Also, what battery do you guys recommend using?

Thanks, appreciated.

I've always had good experiences with yuasa batteries. according to kawaisaki.com yours is the yb10l-a2.

As for the stator coil output, you'd be better off with a shop manual to guide you, if you're testing your electrical system.

Which electronic ignition?
If it's a Dyna S, it will use alot more electrical power than the points did... about twice as much. If you also added lower resistance coils, then it will be more than twice as much. If you are using the Kawasaki electyronic ignition, it will use slightly less than the points did. (But lower resistance coils will still increase power comsumption over the original coils.)

I thought the stator was rated at about 200 watts, which would mean the amperage is somewhere around 14 amps at 14 volts. But that is near it's peak. At idle it will be much less... probably 5 to 10 amps at around 12v.

The original ignition used about 3 amps at 12 volts. With a Dyna S and 3-ohm coils, the ignition will use about 8 amps. The shame of it is, those extra amps are just burned away as heat in the coils and not used to create spark. That's the tradeoff for getting more spark energy at higher RPMs with the Dyna S.
