i too would like to see large chunks of the ugly wires dangling from my frame cut away...ultimately i'd like to be running a minimal battery-less setup w/kickstart, removing all unnecessary switchblocks and idiot lights etc, with just a speedo mounted in the headlight shell.
i'm currently in the process of getting everything rewired close to stock, purely for the purposes of getting it on the road, and as i don't have the skills in this area i am paying a ridiculous amount to have it done professionally. i think if it wasn't so butchered to start off with i might have a shot, but it really is a steaming pile at the mo. the guy who had it before my dad was running a vetter style fairing and hard bags, and rigged all the extra lighting (including a massive spotlight out front) himself. badly. we easily removed a good 3ft of wire from the bike when we first done it up, and that wasn't all of it.
was there a question in all of this? i guess my question is...is it worth paying what i am for a reliable stock(ish) setup, or given the direction i eventually want to go...could i rig something simpler myself(with your generous help)?

Check Ebay for a wiring harness, sometimes you can find them dirt cheap. That would be a good starting point along with a manual for the bike. You can also check the archives here for a wiring diagram. Reading a wiring diagram is intimidating at first, but stare at it long enough and you get the hang of in in no time.

cheers for the tips sarge.
unfortunately i tried that and ended up with a harness that did not match what was on the bike...that's not to say the harness wasn't the right one, could well be that what was on there was wrong. i've got a manual and yep looks like multi-coloured upchuck to this kid. i like the simpler drawings put forth in this thread, seem easier to make sense of.
all that said, i know my limits, and the work has been farmed out-i'll save the experimenting/learning for a project where i don't need the bike on the road asap for reliable transport.
