Also, consider that the cable on CV carbs are only rotating a shaft with butterfly plate(s) attached. On slide carbs, intake vacuum is constantly pulling the slides toward the intake ports, leading to increased friction.

We're considering purchasing a '75 Honda 250 thumper to run around town on. We noticed it has a slide carb with push/pull cables.

Personally, we want complete control of our throttle. If a slide sticks for any reason, we wanna be able to close it.

I've used mine as a spare when the original broke on the road.

Removed my return cable in 1978 and have run it that way since. I have yet to hear of anyone ever having their throttle stay open on these. Now with that being said, I do run 2 cables on my ELR clone only because I am running RS36 flatslides on a warmed up engine. That engine produces so much vacume pressure when I let off the throttle after getting really hard on it that the slides will not return to idle on their own springs so I have to pull them closed. On a stock KZ650 / KZ1000 I wouldn't worry about taking off the 2nd cable.

Just need to make sure the return spring is in good shape and is the factory one, and the throttle assembly is working properly and lubed. It's plenty heavy enough to return the throttle. You don't need a new throttle assembly. Just remove the return cable.

I've only seen a sluggish closing throttle when both cables were installed, and not lubed properly.

The drivability would probably suffer. It could be too much carb for the stock Kz550 (non-gpz) motor. The intake ports in the head would probably need to be hogged out to really use those carbs. The ports are pretty closely matched to the stock TK22 carbs.

They would be a nice collector's item, though, and if you ever swapped to a later-style motor (which have larger ports), it would be nice to have the bigger manual-slide carbs like that, instead of being forced to use CV's.
