dont use the glass inline filters,i watched my neighbors 37 chevy burn to ground a few years back. :( fire dept told me it was common problem for the glass filters with metal end caps to leak.

Thanks for the heads up. I also wonder how strong the glass is.
I bought a couple of the glass filters with removable filters a few years back and never had the nerve to install them because of concerns of glass cracking. I should give them away.

I wish I could get a 5/16" sintered bronze filter in a clear container, but they are pretty scarce. I've seen some in aluminum containers, but they are a little too big to go where I want it.

These might fit.

Here's a clear one:

Clear Filter

Good Luck! :)

I'm using those on three of my four KZ1000Ps. They seem to work fine. The fourth bike has a larger round shaped filter that was installed by a shop.

Thanks, those both look good. I've been looking at those aluminum cans with removable sintered elements. I thought they might be too big, but it's worth a try at this point. I hadn't seen that clear one before.

Am thinking some of the later referenced filters are okay, but aren't sintered bronze. I too prefer the sintered bronze over mesh or other type, but have no comparative data to support superiority of any particular type (just relying on hear-say).

Sometimes the leakage results from a tight bend in the fuel line which stresses the fit onto the filter barb in situations where a straighter connection might prove leak-free.

A 90 degree filter might be the answer.

Redline also has the 5/16" aluminum sintered bronze version with replaceable element (but doesn't list the element or it's price as a separate item).

Good Luck! :)

Z1Enterprises sells them - cheaper too. There are two sizes - I prefer the larger one.

Yeah, Z1 was the first place I checked. I was hoping he'd have the 5/16" version.

GPZ550 should all be 1/4" line. You could change to 1/4" and get the inline filter through Z1 or Bikebandit. The car filters must be made for a pressurized system and don't like gravity feed.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Well, you would think 1/4" would be enough, but the fuel line connection pipes measure 5/16", and the barbs are actually closer to 3/8". It would be quite a wrestle to get 1/4" line to fit.

Looks like I have at least a few options now. Even if I had to use reducers, it wouldn't be the end of the world, but it just looks like hell.

According to my rough estimates, I would need around 5 gallons per hour to be safe at a sustained WOT.

If this filter's claims are true, I'd probably try this first. I'm wary, though, because it looks like more of the same as what I've been using.

Just to confirm -- the petcock and carb inlet each have a 3/8" fitting, and you're using a 5/16" hose.

Why not search for a 3/8" filter instead of a 5/16" filter?
