Teflon thread tape is only suitable for NPT (pipe or tapered threads)
North american color codes are as follows, other parts of the world use different colors. Yellow is always for natural gas.
White tape is a general purpose tape most often used for plumbing.
Yellow is for natural gas, almost the exact same thing as white except that it is rated and tested for use on natural gas lines in enclosed spaces. Many gas inspectors will not allow the use of any other teflon tape.
Green tape is used for oxygen, both breathing oxygen systems and say an oxy-acetylene cutting torch. Same as gas tape it is rated and tested for oxygen use.
Red tape is used on high temperature lines, usually steam lines
A hard to find blue tape is used for potable water lines EX - in a camper.
Thats what I know from my work experiences... I am a Journeyman gas fitter.
