Hi,

I am on the hunt for a piston for my KZ400 B2 front caliper. The partzilla reference is 43048-005. I can't find it anywhere (ebay, cmsnl, ...).
If anyone has one, please give me a shout.

Cheers,

Quick question, I may have found a replacement piston (one for the Discovery 1 Range Rover)
Here are the dimensions:
- Stock piston : 41mm diameter, 31mm height
- Range Rover piston: 41mm diameter, 34mm height

Do you think that these 3 mm longer in height are a big problem ?

I am gonna go ahead and buy one anyways, will report how it fits.

Have you checked with brakecrafters.com? They have found us hard to find caliper pistons twice.

If you can't source the correct part I would suggest getting the LR part machined down to the correct height (whilst it may physically fit the extra height is likely to cause binding when hot which could ultimately lead to it locking on which would be bad for your health)

I have sent a message to brakecrafters to see if they may find this elusive piston. Thank you for the advice Kelly.
Wookie, would you think that a shorter piston than stock would be better then ? I recall finding one of 28mm height during my research.

Possibly but as the pads wear it may come out too far and kink over to one side ?

Seems to me that to kink would necessitate the piston to be clear of the fluid seal. If that happened, I think there would be a much bigger problem as I doubt if the dust seal could withstand the pressure of the fluid.

Seems like a slightly longer one would be ok as long as it did not bottom out on the caliper with new pads, and a slightly shorter one would be ok as long as it did not come past the fluid seal with worn pads. A lot of careful measuring would be in order. Machining a long one to the correct length seems like a workable solution as long as the machinist understands that the outside of the piston is delicate and cannot be damaged.

Thank you both for your replies. Looks like I have to choose between 3 mm shorter or 3 mm longer...
The longer one is on its way, so I guess the choice is made. I will make sure it does not touch the bottom of the caliper with the pads on. If it does, I will cut the piston shorter.
Brakecrafters answered and they do not have that in store, it has been discontinued.

Makes sense, if it ends up being marginal you could always shave the pads for clearance
