Just remembered an alternative to dual plug heads are trenched heads and/or pistons where a "groove" or trench is ground into the chamber or piston for the flame front to travel through. I did this on a BSA Victor but really didn't notice anything different. I had heard about it being done on HD drag engines and Chrysler Hemis. Saw a few articles years ago in the magazines.

Russ,

when did they start issuing log books for Z based engines??

I haven't been keeping up to date but assume it is to bring us into line with the Poms and Cuzzy Bro's that show up for the Island Classic...

Popeye,
I'm a bit confused by your question re getting a log book for Z based engines as I'm talking Period 5 "Forgotten Era" not Period 4 "Post Classic" where Z900's are excluded but if you mean Z1000J/GPZ1100's in Period 5 because they're 81 models I too thought they wouldn't be eligible and bought a GSX1100 to build up as a race bike but found out 2 days later there is a Z1000J in NSW that got a log book because it's got a build date of December 80 on it's compliance plate. Also at the 2005 Island Classic there was a Z1R II with a Z1000J motor fitted. I've had my Z1000J since 84 and when I found out you can get a log book for them scrapped the GSX idea. You going to Mac Park this weekend for the Historic Nationals?

Actually there is a guy who is promoting that very modification and has his own website for it. I'll get the link and post it.

I've read mixed reviews on that practice. Some swear by it and other's say there's no value in it. It does seem to be combusion chamber specific as far as I can tell.

That'd be interesting, found a bit of info on the APE site about ignition timing for single and dual plugs.

Ignition Timing:
Kaw KZ 900 / 1000 / GPZ
Single plug head - 38 degrees
Dual plug Head - 32 - 34 degrees
NOS motors - 26 - 28 degrees

Here's the rest of the article/tips.

used to live in Mt. Gambier in 04 and 05 and was a member of the club there, would love to have made it over for the Nats but we've had a cow of a year and are still recovering. My P4 350 is slated for the 2010 Nats as my 50th b/day present(have to learn to ride the thing first and iron the bugs out) and we have a kz750 based retro drag unit (B/MB modified bike) in the pipeline for my girl to be ready for dial your owns in 09.

with regards Z1000's in P5 I was'nt sure of the legality, I suppose they were not considered by most racers due to the fact they have to compete against 16 valve suzi's

Popeye,
Just got back from the Historic Nationals, Rob Phillis won the 2 championship races on his GSX but the 2 support races were won by a McIntosh Kawasaki 1200, the final race which Phillis didn't enter was Kawasaki's 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Have a look at this web site for full results.

The McIntosh Kawasaki 1200 ridden by David Johnson was the bike with dual plugs I originally started this post about.

Did you take any pictures? I found a few of these on that site:

Just great to see these old bikes leaned as far over as they can go....and then some.
