Hi,
I'm trying to install an oil pressure gauge on a '78 KZ1000. Does anyone know what the thread/pitch is on the oil galley bolt hole? Thanks

you better have a low pressure gauge the kz's with roller bearing rods run less than 10 psi oil pressure

Does anyone know the thread size? I've found some really nice gauges but don't know how to adapt them to fit my motor. I think it would be waaaaay cheaper to buy the gauge, an elbow and a bushing, but what sizes? The gauge has a 3/8" - 27 thread, std NPT, I think.
Thanks

Do you have an oil cooler? Ive seen them put in line with a T fitting. My oil gauge had a standard pipe thread so I drilled and tapped the end of the oil plug .I ended up taking it out because if you dont warm the engine up completly before you nail the gas it would over preasure the gauge and screw up the gauge.

I believe it is NPT thread (National Pipe Thread). I would guess 3/8 NPT but could sure be wrong. If you have a tap and die set, sometimes they contain a couple NPT taps... match the thread. Also, if you go to an autoparts store, they typically have oil pressure gauge installation/adapter kits. I have bought them in the past and they will contain a bag of brass fittings to adapt NPT to SAE or Metric thread. I recall Pep Boys carries them; perhaps other autoparts stores. I don't have a pitch gauge to measure NPT thread or I would just measure one... take the hex head plug with you when you go to the autoparts store.

Thanks for the posts... I found the answer. The thread size for the oil gallery is 14mm, same as the Suzuki GS's. They are impossible to find.
This post just crossed the line into commercial advertising, and that is specifically not allowed on KZR.

NPT is "National Pipe Taper" thread, there is also a NPS "National Pipe Straight" thread.
Because I didn't know this, and the saleman thought that NPT stood for National Pipe Thread, I had a terrible time stopping leaks in my water system plumbing, seems it's almost impossible to get a good seal when you use a NPT male fitting in a NPS female fitting. :(

Thanks for the tips. That's a good idea, tapping the plug. I may look into that if I can't find something releatively cheap. I missed Renobruces reply before it was edited, but thanks for the size. I love the looks of the gauges, but just can't pull the trigger on the $75 or so that the kits go for, considering the gauges are only about $20. Then there's the whole "liquid-filled vs. non liquid-filled" debate. I have already read both sides on this forum in other posts. Why is everything so difficult?
  :P

I just confirmed the thread size as m14x1.5. Now let the search begin!!:P

Oil filled gauges quit functioning after the oil in them gets hot. I have oil pressure gauges on all my bikes. I first tried the oil filled ones, but as I said, they quit working once the bikes are warmed up. Personally, I wouldn't tap my hole. What if you want to remove the gauge? Then what? I have adapters made for me so that if I want to put the original bolt back on, it's just a matter of taking off the adapter/oil pressure gauge and screwing on the bolt.
