Installing my piston rings and noticed that the little lip or cut out that is supposed to be on the second ring is on the inside circumference of the ring and not the outside. This wrong, at least it is according to the manual. Looked at the old rings, and they conform to the manual: Lip to the outside.

What gives? Is this a problem?

Thanks

Also noticed that the "n" is on the same surface as the lip or step. Don't think that is correct either.

Thanks

The notched edge will cause compression to force the ring down and outward to provide a better piston to cylinder wall seal.

Thanks Harry. Where did you copy that info from.

Got any idea why the rings were changed from outer to inner notch?

Thanks

From a service manual.

I have no idea. Over the years I have rebuilt many engines and many of them have at least one ring with an inner notch.
