Cam chain choise
29 Nov 2020 07:28
I see two sorts of cam chains for my Z , endless (tsubaki heavy duty on Z1 enterprices) and one with a link. The one with the link is much cheaper as the Tsubaki but how is the quality. Are there members on the forum who used the link chain? Last time, 38 years ago it was nessesary to split the case of my Z and i used an original endless Kawasaki chain, but now i think thats not nessessary because the bike runs well, only some oil leakage on the head ( i think O ring problem). So if i gonna change the gaskets, piston rings and all the rollers i also want to change the cam chain , but not split the the case.

Splitting the cases is an easy task. You just need to take time to clean all the bolt holes. I changed chains on both my bikes and went with the endless loop Tsubaki heavy duty. I would not want to break a chain while riding.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Play it safe and put the endless cam chain in.
If you ever saw what a snapped cam chain does to all eight valves when it breaks, you would take the time and split the cases!!!!
Pay me now or pay a lot later.

I've seen master links that use a clip. Those ones I'd stay clear of for sure...

Does anyone know of any potential clearance issues with the heavy duty cam chain? I thought I read someone mention that at some point, but can't find it now.

You may be confusing that with the fitting of 'O' ring chains to the early z1/900 which requires spacing out the sprockets a few mill to stop it chewing the trans cover.

You can't go wrong with the HD Tsubaki camchain - best choice as others have mentioned.
And, a Merry Christmas to you, Willem, from the cold and somewhat wet northeast U.S.!

I’m a big rookie with engine building, I’ve been doing research and the Tsubaki HD seems to be the cats meow. Also Jim at Redline cycle claims the HD chain extends the life of the guide rollers.
