On a bike with 10k miles there is a very good chance the valves have never been checked. And yes, that's about the time when all the clearance goes away. Cracking open the valve cover will also allow you to torque the head which should be done regularly and help avoid leaks. Back off the nuts just enough to make them move and then tighten them to spec.

NAPA sells a nice set of metric feeler gauges. If you want to do the math to convert to U. S. measurements, most any auto supply place can hook you up. Lack of valve clearance may not be the problem, but I am a firm believer in doing all the routine maintenance on any newly acquired used motorcycle.
