Looks like a early motor to me not a 87/88. Another CL scam?

Maybe a 1977/78, but definitely not 87/88.

I think the SFbay seller is a little dyslexic. Regardless we know what it is and if it wasn't 2,100 miles away it would be in the back of my pickup already.

The NIB engine is probably one of a kind in the world. Over my price range a tad, but like they say.. "they don't make em anymore".

The one in the basket is a Z1 engine. I can tell by the end of the cam covers and by the "903" on the barrels. My guess is it's from 1976, based on the carbs.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Too far from me. Looks like a typical CL scam.

The barrels may have been bored, but there is definitely a 903 scribed on the front. The engine could also be a 73 to 75, or it could be a KZ engine but the cam cover is definitely Z1. The ends of the cover are nicely rounded. KZ covers are also rounded but they have a definite ring on them. The carbs are not Z1 but they could have been added to an early Z1 engine afterwards. Assuming they were put on the engine at the factory makes this a Z1 engine from 1976.

I'm 99% positive the engine is a Z1 and 90% positive it's a '76.

Ser # on the case pad is difficult to make out, but appears to start with Z1E 03(8?) 4xxx . That, and the long (appears to be 80mm), smooth (no knurling), raised - shoulder (not flat edge-to-edge) pad would indicate Z1-A or KZ900, depending on the 3rd. digit. The question is what is the third digit (3 or 8) of the ser. #? That would go far to identifying it's production era.

Slim Jim, the black cased engine is the one I purchased the serial number is Z1E 034XXX. I thinks it’s a Z1A900. Appears to be bone stock. Haven’t really had time to dig into it yet. Your input is welcome
