82 GPz 1100 ...new valve guide seals, still smokes bad
26 Jul 2019 09:10
Installed new viton valve guide seals installed (using condom over valve stem method ...funny story 'bout girlfriend finding the wrapper in the trash :whistle: :whistle:
)
Anyway, ...the problem is that it smokes like a SOB. Bluish grey smoke. I'm puzzled. Any help would be appreciated. TY

It's still burning oil.
The likely candidate is the piston rings being worn, stuck, or possibly broken. Did the bike sit without running for a long time?
It is also possible (though less likely) the new valve guide seals were faulty from the factory.

Pulled the plugs, cyl #2 is the only wet oily plug. I'm pulling the head tonight (again!).

Before tearing down the head, why don't you do an engine leakdown test? Spend a little cash on a leakdown tester and you could save a lot of time and money.

Just my point of view but if going through the trouble of pulling the head I'd pull the cylinder and measure wear on the bores and pistons too. If all measures well use a bottle brush hone and install new rings and OEM gaskets.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationI just ordered a bore scope to check the cylinders. If one or more are scored that would be a game changer I'd like to be prepared for this next time around.

Steve is right, it´s cheap Investment. My scope comes with an periscopic mirror to view upside down to the valves.

Well, there was a small remnant of condom trapped under my new ex valve seal on cyl #2 LOL Good grief! Have it all back together now, however, haven't got around to startin 'er up just yet. Fingers and toes crossed! I noticed there was a very slight amount of play with the valve in the guide BUT I get a good solid POP sound when holding finger over one side of guide and then pulling valve stem out of the other end. Dunno how good of a test that is, ..but hooking up all the gizmos to check for play is kinda ridiculous IMHO. Anyway, I'll post whatever happens when I run 'er next. Thanks everyone!!! The help here is right on time!
