You can drain the oil in a clean pan to see if there are ant chunks of black plastic. You can also take off the cam chain adjuster to see how much travel you have left. If it's toward the end it's time to replace them for sure.

Thanks Steve, I never thought of looking at the cam chain adjuster to see how far it has traveled. Sounds like a great idea.
