Just go and buy yourself a can of paint stripper and brush it on. Its the same as what they sell as gasket remover, and a lot cheaper!!!! Get the one with all the warning labels on the can. It works the best!!!

I'll definitely drop the pan. Accidentally dropped one of the stupid rubber dampers from the bottom roller down in there. No telling what kind of damage it could do.
KZB2 650 wrote: Did you drop the pan? Rags can keep most of the gasket and junk out but I dropped too much in and flushed the hell out of the motor through the removed pan and by flipping it over a few times. Used spray brake cleaner, wd 40, a little gas and maybe some carb cleaner although kerosene would be safer by far than the gas...... after 65,000 miles I bet there is a ton of sludge in there. I replaced the screen on the oil pump too but that might not be needed on yours.

What's the purpose of flushing with diesel?

Modern oils and fuels probably don't really need to be flushed with diesel oil/ fuel.
But some old guys still do it.
Especially after a fresh rebuild and gasket scraping exercise!!

Exactly. At each step I'll pour some to wash away the pieces. It's cheap and a good cleaner.

I dropped the oil pan and gave it a shot, worked pretty well and I got everything pretty clean. Also got my cylinder block back. Now I'm just waiting for the mail so I can get it all back together.

Once I have it all together I'll pour about 1/4 gallon in with the drain plug in. I open the drain and watch the crap I missed come out. I also use a 1 gallon oil container cut out on one side. Easy to see what came out. I then put in my new filter and oil.I change it in about 500 miles.

First attempt, and was a joy too. A cheap one...
The black plastic strip is slick. It gets pressed down the piston by the bottom of the cylinder sleeve as it presses on the edge of the strip. The rings pop free inside the sleeve where they should, with the gaps locked in their proper positions. You don't get that using fingers to compress the rings.
Good Fortune!

I keep telling myself I'm going to get some of the proper hose clamps, shim stock, etc, and make some ring compressors, but when the time comes I always wind up pinching in the rings with my fingers and a plastic white stick during install. Never broke a ring yet (knock on wood).

Nice! Pretty sure I have some clamps and plastic laying about, so I'll probably try that. Thanks to everyone who participated in this thread I think I'll get her together just fine.

If you haven't done so already , wipe some motor oil on those fresh honed cylinder walls to keep them from rusting while you wait for the rings
