Removing the studs is NOT easy. You need a stud remover tool. I picked one up from Harbor Freight and while it worked, it marked up the studs pretty bad.

A scotchbrite pad works well to scrub down the gasket surfaces.

And good job of research finding the chemicals you need. I love Simple Green and need to try that Pro formula some time. Please report out on how well it works.

Made some headway on the gasket surfaces of the head and block tonight. Turned out fairly well I'd say. Now I just need to get the valves out, cleaned and lapped. Then decide which o-rings I want to pay to replace.

I've found all the replacement pieces, the oval o-rings being the most expensive for their size. The old ones are still intact and seem to be in good shape, although obviously compressed. The engine was not leaking oil (on the outside anyways) before the tear down so I think I may be able to reuse them. The gasket kit is currently on its way to the states from Canada.

I'd replace them unless you want to do it again.

Red flag on "gasket kit" which suggests aftermarket parts.

Reusing o-rings is false economy. If by some miracle they do not leak on startup, they will fail much sooner than the new ones, thus necessitating another teradown in the near future, necessitating the early replacement of all those new gaskets you have coming.
