Lockup clutch or not for the street
01 Jul 2015 15:19
I am building a Pro Street KZ1000. I'm running a 300 tire with air shifter. MRE trans with billet 2nd gear. The bottom end is a 1327 10.5 and the head is a 83-84 GPZ1100 head done by Larry Cavanaugh flowing over 100cfm. It's going to be ridden occasionally and once in a while at the drag strip. I was wanting some feedback about a lockup clutch whether it's necessary or not.
Thanks guys.

Hey Tom
Most guys I know run them on high powered bikes, You don't mention what clutch combo you run so I can only guess.
Lock ups are more important on turbo bikes than other bikes as we make more power up higher in the rpm range and that is where our bikes really start slipping the clutches. You wont need one until you start eating clutch plates, or be proactive and put it on now

I'm using a FBG welded clucth basket with HD springs, also the bearing style pusher and kevlar friction plates. I just got a really good deal on a barely used MTC lockup and MTC cover. I had one on my other kz with a 1385 11.1 to1 street motor. Seemed to work but i was fairly new at this degree of KZ fun.

Then put it on and enjoy

I run stock springs with my lockup, very easy on the hands with light clutch pressure. I've seen littler motors than yours need them so go for it, You won't regret.

i think a lockup is one of the few performance products that has absolutely no draw back.

. You can run the HD springs ( I do ) But it is probably overkill.
I installed them pre turbo with a HD clutch with extra plates ( Action 4 , a Bill Hahn company from the distant past ) so I kept them . But my clutch lever needs a heavy hand. Maybe one of these days I will lighten them up

I've been planning on copying what zukedave did to his clutch arm. Make it a little longer, less pull tension required. I've got my eye on some NOS ones in case I don't like it.

run the lockup as for springs you can use worn out stock springs or better yet use worn out H2 springs never run HD spring with lockup you are defeating purpose !
