Cam end plugs-- thoughts ???

What do people think of this process?
Has anyone ever tied this specific process before and had success?

"Then I figured out what worked for this motor. Here’s what did the trick:
With the cam cover off and the caps removed, clean the surfaces of the end caps as well as the part of the head where the caps are inserted. Use acetone and wear a glove and eye protection so you don’t get hurt. This will remove pretty much all of the oil residue.
Apply Permatex Ultra Black in a thick bead onto each cam end cap. Spread the Permatex with a small flat bladed screwdriver or something similar. Install the caps onto the head. Wipe away the excess.
Install the cam cover (no gasket) and screw the bolts in finger tight.
Let the motor sit for at least 24 hours so that the Permatex will dry thoroughly. Is it really necessary to wait 24 hours? I’m not sure, but it worked for me.
Remove the cam cover, install the gasket and then reinstall the cover. This time tighten up the cover as you normally would.
Note: I did not use the viton rubber sealing material that came with the caps. Permatex Ultra Black was all that was needed to seal it up. "

I think I used Ultra Black last time and could not get two of them to stay put, 1st time in 35 years.
It was the same two over and over so I know it was the plugs for some reason.
I thought I had it and got 15 miles from home before it popped out,
1st time she ever stranded me in all the years I've had her and it was totally my fault :pinch:
So i went with the billet aluminum ones, no more trouble ;)

I used hondabond instead of permatex and let the valve cover sit without the gasket for a day. Put it all back together and there aren't any leaks

Thanks for sharing....sounds like it would work well.

For my current project, I bought a newer style aluminum plug with a groove and o-ring type seal. I don't know of anybody that has tried them yet, but I hope to within a couple of months.

I just got them as well.
Those are the same ones used in the procedure I mentioned above.

Two questions-
1. Did you use the the original rubber plugs or the billet ones (when you used the hondabond)?

2. If the billet ones were used- did you use the Hondabond in conjunction with the rubber O-ring material? Or without it?

The original plugs were hardened an unusable so I replaced them with oem rubber plugs from Z1 enterprises. I just put a pea sized amount of hondabond on the bottom of the plugs and installed them to the head of the engine and installed the valve cover without the gasket for a day.

You added permatex over the o-ring material? I'm thinking those should seal themselves. Otherwise, you can buy plain aluminum plugs without the o-ring groove.

Have you tried them without sealer on the o-ring side?

I reused my rubber ones for 10 years. When they started leaking I'd use RTV. I put in new ones with no sealer and they lasted until I got my billet ones.

These did catch my eye. Might want to try theses myself. Do they come in a flat black finish?? I don't like anything shiny or chrome on my motors. Remember the old saying, If it don't go, chrome it!!!

I have always used REAL Kawasaki cam plugs 92066-017 installed backwards, and NEVER had one leak or pop out.

Steve,
What's your process for using the billet ones? Do you use the o ring material and a sealant? Or just one of the two?
