@Roadflyer the cams were good in relation to eachother, just not in relation to the crank.
Never thought about it but can the piston top get damaged ever?

Use the air leakdown test and listen for which valves are bent through
the intake and exhaust. Then take off head, out those valves, check the
seats, guides, new seals in, lap, pressure test them ALL>

That may have been good advice yesterday morning...
#1 and 4 were getting weak compression and when the head came off I saw that 1 and 4 had lots of carbon build up so we kept on disassembling and saw that the 1 and 4 pistons didn't have offset rings while 2 and 3 where offset correctly which may explain the carbon build up a bit.
So we may have gone overboard, but we've got quite a long winter here so I've got till may before I even think about putting it on the road.
