They existed... Kawasaki was using up parts - on some of the late run KZ900's you will find some parts unique to the 77's. As these bikes were assembled in Lincoln Nebraska they were just for the North American market, so the rest of the world did not see them.
Kawasaki's dealer software lists these bikes and does show some of the differences unique to the 77 bike - one is the solid-state rectifier used on some of the 77 bikes.
