The tensioner packaging listed their website to refer to for directions. Seemed to be fairly generic in their description, and not much help. So what your are saying as far as how much tension is needed, not a whole lot.

I was pretty far off.
I took a couple spare motors' tensioners apart. One motor is fully assembled and I took the cap off to see where the crosswedge had been set (automatically).
Then I took apart another tensioner (identical), and pressed on it with two different digital scales, so that the tensioner was at the same setting as the first one.
Both times it came out to about 15 pounds. I'd say the range is 14 to 16 pounds.
So the automatic tensioner foot presses on the chain guide with a constant force of about 15 (+/- 1) pound, with the cross wedge removed. The additional thrust added by the cross wedge spring is maybe a pound or less.
I can't say if a manual tensioner should be set to the same force or not.
