Spark plug gap in my CLYMERS book said 0.028-0.032in. Any idea out there if I should go with the high or low number?

Depending on your coils. If these are the original 32 yer old coils than go with the smaller. If they are replacement OE coils than go with the larger. If they are aftermarket hi output coils you can go .040"

All sparkplugs wear over time, so by starting at the low end of the gap spacing, the plugs will gradually increase. Are you using the as supplied ignition coils, sparkplug wires and sparkplug caps? You ignition parts are 32 year old! Past time for replacements/upgrades.

Yeah, ignition is original and coils have cracks that I tried to repair once apon a time. I will go with the smaller of the 2 gaps as said.

If your coils are cracked, you would be wise to replace them. Get some higher output coils for the bike, it will help it a fair bit. That is if your wiring is good so the voltage gets there to power them.

Heat and time. It is not uncommon on coils that old.

Even when the new, the ignition coils were marginal, put some years on them with stop and go traffic, and they will cook/overheat. Where they're mounted also traps the engine heat.

If your coils have cracks, moisture will get inside, shorting out the windings making for weak to no spark possibly stranding you.

My ST only has 4000 miles on it and both coils have big cracks in them. It runs fine that way so I don't care to fool with them since I ride it all of 10 or 15 miles every couple years.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

You could burn out the ignition if the coils start arcing internally.
