On the big fours when the bike is on the side stand the oil comes up almost half way inside that cover. I don't know about the others.

That may also be true on the twins. On the center stand, though, there was only a residual amount when I pulled the cover (which has been years, so memory could be fuzzy.)

we have already determined that the big fours have oil in there. We are trying to find out in 400s have oil in there.bj

This first drawing shows oil entering #14 starter motor clutch.

The oil flow chart in the following post shows more clearly an arrow depicting oil flow into the alternator area.

Note arrow pointing to interior of alternator cover.
