I'm a mechanic and have accses to a head surfacer (large belt sander) When adjusting valves, most likly the valves will be tight, whick will require thinner shims. Could I just sand off the required amount to be at the proper thickness? If I took off too much I would have to buy new ones which most people do anyway. I'm assuming that these shims are not easilly available anymore?, or they have to be ordered? Is this stupid or does it make sense?

The shims go through a hardening process. When you sand or grind them, it ruins the hardening and they can break up. This would not be a good thing. If you need shims, buy new ones or if you are serious about the bike, buy a shim kit. Z1Enterprises sells a shim kit for a reasonable price. Shims also come up on eBay all the time. Don't use any that have evidence of grinding or sanding.

Thanks guys, that pretty much answers the question. Looks good on paper but as WG says, not a good idea. Thanks guys...

After you calculate what shims you need (from the chart in your manual) take them to your dealer. See the service guys. The guys at the Kaw dealer near me swapped them out for free. Do not go to the parts counter and ask to buy them, head straight to the service dept.

I havent tried it yet, but I have heard lots of guys swapping with the dealer for free or a small fee. or get a kit from Z1. or trim the valve(usually only done when seats are recut though), but as stated dont remove material from the shim, it could crack if you remove the hardened surface
