For anything to be collectable there has to be someone to want to collect said item. Some items have a lot of followers some require a specific crowd. Just because EVERYONE isn't after them does not mean they are not rare. Don't get me wrong I am a custom guy but some things are best left stock. If I had the opportunity I would buy it and restore it. Ride it a little take it to bike shows, eventually someone will offer you a good deal of cash for it. Personally I would buy it just to say I had one.
Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking I'll keep it mostly original if I pick it up, but the shocks will be upgraded though and I know you guys properly won't like it, but the headlamp and speedometer will most like go too (for some Suzuki bandit looking round ones I think). We'll see how it goes.

My riding experienced is a few year rusty but I think I should be able to tell if it feels okay. My last bikes were a Yamaha FZR 1000 Exup (89) and a Yamaha RD 350. I haven't really thought about it but it seems I have a thing for cult bikes

I'm now the proud owner of the above bike. It looks original to me and sounds great and looks even better than on the pictures.

Nothing wrong about upgrading a ride. In my book though , no cutting allowed. Wires maybe, but nothing that will permanently change anything. Save the old parts.
BTW Congrats on getting the bike! Sweet!
I don't have a plan and I'm sticken' to it! '77 KZ 650 / 750 GPz custom project in progress

Thats a nice bike . If you want to cafe it . Guys get old knives or coins and polish them up and ruin them thinking they will make them worth money. I would just put that one away and decide what you really want before you do anything. If you can afford to just keep it as is and just buy another to go crazy on you would be way better off. Yes some are rare and also depends what part of the world you live in.

Well, I believe a 700 is rare here in Scandinavia as they are made for the US market. After seeing how original it is and finding out how many owners chop these bikes up, I won't be doing much to it. Only things like maintenance and new shocks, etc. Only little things that keeps the original look.
