Should i buy this bike???? kz750
17 Apr 2013 21:24
This is literally my 1st bike ever. I have a good amount riding experiance though. i have ridden dirt bikes and mini bikes. I am also currently taking the motorcycle saftey course. So heres the deal on craigslist there is a guy with an 81 kz750 4 cyl, bike runs fine. Paint is shot and tach doesnt work. I really have 0 experiance fixing these bikes im a straight noob. So i dunno how hard and or reliable these engines are. the thing is the guy is selling it for 1k, this is what caught my eye. First bike i wanted a cheap bike to just learn. The only other stuff i could find in this range are like little slow cbs that cant go on the highway... :pinch: :pinch: It has brand new grips/seat/clutch cable. Basically should i buy this? is it safe to start on? how reliable is it? how hard are they to work on?

yes.
basically you just listed my situation a few years ago. 1980 KZ750 was my first bike, I had experience with dirt bikes and mini bikes etc. KZ's are inexpensive, reliable, easy to work on, enough for highway use but perfect for around town. And since you've already found this forum you can find as much or as little info as you want. Seriously the people here know everything about these bikes you could ever want to know.
I would say make sure it runs good like the ad says- no smoking, leaking gas from the carbs, funny noises etc. When I was a total noob going to buy mine, I brought my friend with me that new a lot more about bikes than me so I didn't make an expensive mistake. "bad paint" is fine, "runs bad" is not.
Everyone that lists on craigslist basically knows they are going to haggle- so if you want to buy it offer less than asking price and go from there. (unless of course the pictures do it no justice and it looks and runs perfect.)
of course it is your decision in the end, just my two cents.
p.s. watch out they're addictive

750 was my first too. 1 dollar a cc is a good starting point. bullet proof motor. easy to work on. haggle and see if he will take 750

30-50 mpg, depending on tune/condition/weather/rider.

I agree start at 750 and see where it goes. Actually, don't talk money first. First things first go to see it and decide if you want it and that it is what he says it is. Bring cash and make an offer, it's harder to say no when he sees it in cash on the spot

I'd say its a good size for a starter bike. Take it slow while you get used to the weight and power. Should be fine. Hope it's a good runner. This site is great for helping on what issues you might encounter.
Good luck!
Good luck!
