What's it worth
06 Mar 2013 01:19 - 07 Mar 2013 17:12
The time has come for me to part ways with my 1977 KZ1000 LTD, though I am at a loss at to it's actual value. I was hoping to get some feedback from you guys. My best friend and I spent the better part of 6 years piecing it back together from it's semi-basket case condition we got it in. I haven't ridden it or worked on it for quite some time now. It is currently located in N. California If there is anything I left out please feel free to ask. Thanks--Mason

Engine completely rebuilt, probably less than 3,000 miles on the new motor. I can verify actual mileage shortly
Engine
Wiseco 1075cc big bore kit
stainless steel valves
new clutches
clutch basket welded at APE racing.
Guages & Controls
original guages restored by Bob Harrington/Z-Restorations
New GXR controls
New sportsman handle bar
Paint
Bike completely debadged and painted 2009 Subaru WRX Obsidian Black Pearl (pic shows badges on the tank, those were removed and the tank resprayed last year.
New American Classix side covers
New tailfairing
Wheels/Seat
Original wheels powder coated black
Original Seat pan recovered.
Suspension
progressive rear shocks
progressive front fork springs.
Vance and Hines 4-1 Exhaust.
crossdrilled rotors
Rebuilt BS-34 Carbs from a gentlemen in Texas that I know was popular on this site. the name escapes me though. Wired George??
Only negatives are cosmetic really
Frame was never painted or powdercoated. Still structurally sound but would look better with fresh paint or powdercoating.
front forks need to be polished. Looks like the original clear coat on them is yellowing. Could easily be re-polished and shot with a clear.

Motor got a wiseco 1075 big bore kit, and yes you are correct those are BS34 carbs. I found the wiredgeorge invoice in my email. The bike is stored in California at the moment, so I don't have it to look at. I am going through receipts and emails and updating the original post as I go.

I think you have a chunk of change invested in the bike. I doubt if you will get your investment back but you never know.
Nice bike.

You're right, I do, but I knew a long time ago that I probably wouldn't see all of the money I put into it. I enjoyed building it, and had a lot of friends come together for various pieces (paint, seat, etc) . There's a big backstory about how I ended up with it and why I finished it, but none of that is of any interest to anyone here. I'm just trying to figure out what a ball park fair price would be.

Since nobody wants to through a number out, I give it a shot. I would guess $3000 to $3500. But more toward the lower part of the range I would guess. At least in my area. I say that since a 77 KZ1000 is not going to be as desirable as a 73-75 Z1 or a Z1R. Nice bike, definitely! But You probably have more invested in the bike, as you pointed out. Another important point, is that the bike is worth more if it was as close to stock as possible. So all the customizations that added to the cost of the built will have reduced the resale value. The one below may fetch $5000. But that one is all original, even the paint. And although its not an 73-75, at least its the first year for LTD's.

I agree with Joe. Except more like $2500-3000 if roadworthy. I think the 1000s will start to climb in next few years.

I started at $8500 on mine and came withing $500 of a sale of his offer of $7000 on this. It's all about the supply and demand deal. Going to Daytona with a price tag over 5 figures!
Your bike looks good! I'd start with at least $5000 and go from there!
This is the bike I'm refering to but it's turbo now or should I say, almost.

See what similar bikes are selling for at Redline in Chicago. Les is right $5.000.00 is a good starting point.
I have a 1980 Kawasaki KZ750 Ltd. I bought new. I recently managed to get it out of my garage after 28 years and put it on the road again (2010). I feel like a kid all over again. Since I have acquired 3 78 KZ1000 Ltd, 1 1981 KZ1000 Ltd, and another 1980 KZ750 Ltd. Love the LTD's.

My first thought was about $4000-4500. Good luck.
