Engine Case Cleaning
19 Dec 2010 20:54
Hi Everyone, Looking for any tips regarding cleaning an enigine case. I have a complete engine that is out of the frame, but it is nasty dirty. I've read some about soda blasting but am not sure whether that would be the right call on a complete engine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Thanks.

I just finished doing mine, I used a engine degreaser on it first, then i used VHT paint stripper and then went over it with VHT case paint, looks great, I've soda blasted carbs before but didnt really need to for this, check the budget soda blaster thread for more info on that

Thanks for the info stonemaster! I took your advice and checked out the soda blaster thread. Coolest idea I've seen in awhile. Can't wait to try it. Think I'll lug it to the car wash first and give it a good hose down. Maybe a spray down with gunk would be in order too. Thanks again Bro.

do not pressure wash, rinse gently after degrease (gunk), I used vinegar and water in a spray bottle, with engine together never wash with high pressure

as for the diy budget soda blaster. i have a 15 gall, decent size compressor. it took forever just to do my oil pan. i will either grit my teeth and finish the same way, or pay a machine shop to soda blast em.....joe
is this because the motor is still together? my cases are split, and was told by many members here to take them to the car wash...which i did.do not pressure wash, rinse gently after degrease (gunk), I used vinegar and water in a spray bottle, with engine together never wash with high pressure

Many well-qualified folks recommend against any glass bead ever touching the inside of an engine or any of the internal parts.
Because getting all the glass beads removed borders on the impossible.
Good Fortune!

I've been glass beading parts for over 30 years!
Transmissions, cases, heads.
Yes it is alot of work, but it can be done!
Of course I always thread bolts into any holes and tape oil galleys.
I always wash in hot soapy water with air agitation too.
And 3 and 4 times!
