Thanks for sharing all you have done to the LTD. I dreamt of owning one of these in the late 70s. In 79 a neighbor had one with clip ons. All of us bike heads would run to the windows when he road up everyday. Still the best looking air-cooled in-line four out there.
My 25 year old son and I are finally working on starting my 76, then building it into something fun.
Ride safe.

10 Jul 2011 11:57Very nice bike.

this is the 1st time i have seen a 76 kz900 that is known to be original. i see some things that mine does not have. mine was modded before i bought it in 79. mine does not have the hook or tab on the frame above the side cover, what is that for. i can raise the seat all the way without it hitting the rt side cover. so i need to remove the cover to raise the seat all the way. i always wondered if i have an incorect side cover?

The hook is a helmet hook. The helmet remains secure while the seat is locked down.
The 2nd "rear" helmet hook is removable, and also allows the helmet to remain secure while the seat is locked down.
Both helmet hooks may be used simultaneously to hold and secure two helmets onto the bike.
Using the permanent forward hook to mount a helmet requires careful attention so as not to mar the left side cover, because the secured helmet rests against the side cover.
The oem seat, as originally fitted, when lifted and allowed to remain open, touches and rests against the right side cover. And would sooner or later likely abrade the painted finish on the side cover. To avoid contact with the side cover, I added a nylon strap to limit the seat's open swing, whereby the seat remains open without touching the side cover.
Good Fortune!

interesting. i always thought something was amiss with my side cover.
my 76 doesnt have the permanent helmet hook just the bolt on 1. i'll have to take a close look at the frame and see if there are any signes that it has been cut off.

You take good care of your toys!
Am a bit disappointed to NOT see a coil mod on the LTD though
