Nice Z1! May I ask what purpose the steering damper serves? I'm not familiar with what they do on motorcycles...

So your handle bars dont hit the gas tank.

A steering damper serves to dampen (ie smooth out) the steering. Many of us hope it'll eliminate the death wobble. These are especially useful for highway cruising when there are water drainage lines carved longitudinally (with the flow of traffic) into the concrete/tarmac.

A steering stop is the little stub that won't allow your handlebars to rotate so far as to hit the tank.

Ok...I want both now lol! BTW...just read your Alaskan Adventure story that you have linked in your signature. I wish I had time to attempt a long ride like that. Must have been awesome (until the problems at least)

Your bike should already have a steering stop- you should be able to see a nub, about a quarter in in diameter sit out from underneath your frame, right where the lower triple tree is. There should be two bump stops cast into your lower triple tree. Gently and slowly rotate your handlebars- they should stop their rotation before the bars hit the tank. If you're anal like me, throw a soft towel over the tank to ensure you don't scratch anything.
