Just an update, I have been working pretty hard on the 550, trying to get it done for spring, I'm down to painting the wheels and having the frame blasted and painted. I was going to have it powder coated, however due to the cost, I decided to just paint it myself. Thats the way it came from the factory so its good enough for me. And the paint i use is epoxy based and tougher than crap.

Hi all...just an update. 550 is waiting for the frame to be blasted still; all other parts done. I am debating on a big bore kit and a megacycle cam with a road race grind. It would wake it up nicely. The 1100 is mostly done, rear end is mounted with a modified stock swingarm and the 87 gxsr 18" rear wheel. I purchased a 87 gixxer rear brake and rebuilt and mounted it. Had to weld a bracket on the bottom of the swing arm for the torque arm. Mounted up the zephyr shocks, no prob. Front wheel FINALLY fitted with the 86 gsxr 18" wheel, had to mill the mounting points for the rotors almost 10"mm. Fabricated adapters for the brakes and milled spacers and shims for the 15 mm to 17 mm bearing and axle. And it all works....18" gsxr wheels on a GPZ1100. Really makes it look like S1 with those wheels. I bought a zrx 1100 swing arm, but..it does not bolt up, slightly to wide between pivot holes. Also the lower bar of the arm does not clear the Kerker pipe. So I guessing this needs to be modified (the kerker?) The tank still needs to be sorted, I really want a late model J tank, I have two GPZ1100 tanks I could trade for one? I was also thinking about dropping in a megecycle .385" cam to beef it up a bit.

Here is the latest update. Finally finished up mounting the ZN700 instruments...I'm really happy with the out come. Looks factory and bolted pretty much right up. A little trimming here and there but not much. Wiring was one to one...can't get any easier than that.

GSXR 18" Wheels, front and rear fully mounted and functional, chain converted to 530, 34 mm flat sides mounted, Brakes mounted and functional. Last and biggest pain, gpz fuel tank petcock interfering with the carbs. Only thing I can think of is cutting the old mount point and welding it further back. i can't do that, my welding skills are not that good.

But almost there! In the mean time I bought a sweet 2000 ZRX1100. I'll have one old and one newish...

YES! Finally have the GPZ1100 on the road! It looks awesome exactly what I was going for..and pioneered new ways to update these.
Adapting the 87 GSXR wheels, I think , is best way to get that original S1 look without having to spend $5000.00 on dynomags. And they are friggin cool looking. 310 mm full floating disk, modern tires, fully adjustable KYB ZRX rear shock, upgraded meters...and those gorgeous RS flat slides; which are driving me nuts at the moment tuning. When she gets on the pipe it goes like stink.

As far as I know this is the first and only conversion to 18" gixxer wheels.

Thanks, it's a work in progress.

Current list of bits an pieces:

Early 18" GSXR wheels: 110 front, 150 rear.
Dynatek 30ohm coils with large copper leads.
Iridium NGK plugs
Mikuni RS 34DS FS (pumper) Carbs <<< Maybe should have gone bigger.
Individual Cheap'y pods. <<< Might get K&N
Vintage Original Kerker pipe
GSXR Rear brake
Not in photo CBR600 F3 front brakes.
PMC KZ1000R ELR S1 replica rear sets from Webbike Jap.
ZRX1100 KYB Rear shocks
Progressive fork springs.
Racetek Gold Valve Cartridge Emulators for the forks.

I really like the old race bike look, the original MKII and KZ1000J race bikes...and of course the S1. I started thinking of maybe emulating some of what DoctorGamma did with his MKII. (Thats one sweet bike).

One thing I'm not sure about it is to go full tilt on the whole ZRX parts upgrade or stick with original wheel size and basic suspension. (with upgrades). I have a full set of ZRX parts because I also have a 2000 ZRX with lots of cools parts too. This sucks though, last summer I was wipeout by a jerk on his phone and did some damage to the ZRX and me. Thats why I have some spare rex parts. Putting the ZRX back together now, still need to get the tank painted.

Wishlist:
AP calipers and rotors
84' gpz1100 bathtub head
hot street cam (web or crane or Yosh?)
repaint...everything.

If anybody that has a Zed with the 17" wheels and the ZRX parts I would like to know what the handling differences are like? Right now I can putt along in first at idle and do figure 8's lock to lock with near zero effort. I try that on my cbr600F3 and it wants to fall into the turns and you have to muscle it around (and its 150 lbs lighter).

The handling and cornering properties are great with 17" wheels, never had any wobble issues on high Speed anymore. drives like a train on a track.
ZX9R wheels,upside down fork, front/rear disk brakes.

Had to Interrupt my mono shock Project for the summer time fun.

Looks awesome, did you do any frame mods? Have you calculated the head angle with the upgrades?

Thanks

Had bought a Frame bracing kit, mono shock bolt on kit Susuki GSXR1100 engine conversion kit plus the engine for 250 Euro last year. The Price was a steal.
The Frame in the Picture is an especially Italian Z1000 Frame with stamped stars before and after the VIN#! A very popular frame for the Japenese collectors.
He ask 50 Euro for the Frame but i had no more space in my car to took him home.
The steering head angle is stock and don´t need any mods.
